Sugar Sand Park
Located at the southeast corner of Military Trail and Palmetto Park Road, Sugar Sand Park is the epicenter of community activity in Boca Raton. Amenities include an indoor field house (gymnasium) that’s in constant use for everything from Basketball to Volleyball to Fencing. There are 6 baseball fields (with varying field dimensions) that are used by the teams who play in both the Spring and Fall seasons of Boca Raton Little League. There are also 8 basketball hoops at a low height for younger players and 8 basketball hoops on the outdoor roller rink.
Between August and September, the gym is used extensively by the Boca Hoops youth basketball league, which has been a favorite activity of boys and girls since it was founded in 1989. A second field house has reportedly been approved by the Greater Boca Raton Beach and Parks Commissioners which will be built in part due to the growth of the Boca Hoops league.
For younger kids, there is a merry-go-round, a science center with constantly changing activities, a huge (outdoor) science playground and lots of room to run around. The science playground is multi-story and provides lots of hide and seek opportunities. Adults are warned to “watch your head” as some of the pathways are ideal for kids and too low for parents to traverse while standing upright. Beginning in June of 2015 the playground was closed for significant renovations. It’s scheduled to reopen in April of 2016.
Sugar Sand’s Community Center also has a number of seasonally themed activities, including Shriek Week every Halloween.
Throughout the park there are lots of areas for picnicking and grilling. These can be used on a first come, first served basis, but they can also be reserved in advance for birthday parties or other gatherings.
Lastly, Sugar Sand Park is home to the Willow Theater which is known for both movies and kid-friendly theatrical productions.
