Camino Square
Although not approved yet, a new 350-unit apartment building project called Camino Square has been proposed for downtown Boca Raton. This $80 million rental complex is projected to include two eight-story buildings—one with 199 apartments and the other with 151 units. The project would also contain two parking garages with a total of 631 parking spaces and a public dog park. The design rendering shows a modern interpretation of Addison Mizner’s architectural style.
Camino Square would be part of the redevelopment of an abandoned property in the old Winn-Dixie shopping center at 171 W. Camino Real on the corner of Camino Real and the Florida East Coast Railway tracks, just off Dixie Highway next to the Boca Express Train Museum. The project would be built on the eastern half of the 9-acre site, taking up about half of the plaza. The other half is owned by Kimco Realty Corp., a New York-based developer that has not yet presented plans for their section of the property.
The developer working on this project is FCI Residential, the real estate arm of sugarcane giant Florida Crystals run by the same family who owns Domino Sugar. FCI develops, constructs, and also manages apartment homes and communities in South Florida known for luxurious amenities including resort-style pools with adjacent lap pools, sundecks with cabanas, tot lots, gazebos, and outdoor kitchens.
Plans for the project are expected to be presented to the city’s Community Appearance Board and Planning and Zoning Board in early 2018. Once approved, construction should take about 20 months to complete.
